If the 355 represents ultimate iconic status amongst mid-engined supercars, then the 550 Maranello does it as the supreme continent crushing V12 GT.  It’s the kind of Ferrari that Enzo Ferrari started making in the 1950’s: a front engined V12 gentleman’s coupe.

This car though, was commissioned by Luca De Montezemola to be a kind of rich mans M3.  A supercar that you really could use every day if you wanted to.  It would be the first front engined V12 Ferrari since the wonderful Daytona of the 70’s and this was to be no dainty fragile toy: this car is well engineered and is well up to the original design brief.

The end result was launched to the world in 1996, a 199mph 5.5 litre £150,000 2 seater coupe: the flag ship of the Ferrari range and a conscious move away from the wide looking, side vented Testarossa style flat 12’s of the 80’s.  This was a truly beautiful car.  Not “Fast & Furious” more sublime and cultured, but don’t for a minute think this has compromised the car’s ability because the opposite is the case.  The way the car goes and handles totally belies its weight.  The adjustable suspension is still state of the art.

Ferrari were right on top of the handling game in the 1990’s.  The 355 is, to experienced hands, a very capable, exploitable chassis. The 550 Maranello is generally perceived amongst the motoring media to be even better. It won the accolade in Evo Car magazine of being the Car of the Decade in the 1990’s: so unsurpassed was its unique blend of power, handling, delivery, poise and feel and whatever else comprises of “evoness”.  The later 575 Maranello, while slightly up on power, was to be fair hardly maligned, but mildly criticised for lacking this fluency of response on the open road that made the 550 so special.

We would prefer our clients to drive the 355 and the V8 vantage before driving the 550.  Because only then can you genuinely perceive the unique blend of thought & desire, of feeling and passion but also the technical genius and attention to detail that has gone into this car.  Some people would say that it is outrageous a car can cost £150,000.

We disagree and we really hope you will too.
